Danby Castle Wedding

Danby Castle Wedding:
April and Tom’s Danby Castle wedding took place in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors in April this year. It was an intimate wedding with an indoor ceremony with just the closest of family and friends before their outdoor wedding reception in the castle ruins. I love a Danby Castle wedding for it’s epic scenery and moorland setting. As a North Yorkshire wedding photographer, I am really spoiled to be shooting in some of the most beautiful outdoor wedding settings. Danby Castle is no exception either. Even snow and cold weather only adds to the stunning scenery.
Tom & April met me at a wedding fayre at the National Railway Museum in York back in 2017. As soon as I met them, I (rather selfishly) wanted them to pick me. I could tell straight away that we had a connection. This was only enforced further by the revelations that we both love Harry Potter, Batman and Japanese anime. Tom is also a massive Uncharted and Last of Us fan. I have never met a fan of these video games in real life, so I was chuffed to be able to talk video games. And yes, fangirl about Yuri on Ice with April. In fact, the more I got to know this couple, the more I got along with them.
I also could see why they were in love too. When I photographed them felt very much like two separate pieces coming together to create something new and wonderful. Something strong but also delicate. There are some couples I meet that feel as though they are 100% perfect for one another, and I really feel as though that’s the case with Tom and April.
Every time I met Tom and April for their pre-wedding photos and consultation, they hadn’t really decided on an exact theme. They knew they wanted a Danby Castle wedding. They knew that they wanted to include woodland animals and incorporate daffodils and spring too. However, it wasn’t until I saw them a few weeks before the wedding when they mentioned the Alice in Wonderland aspect to their day. I got it right away as all of the pieces clicked into place. Both their wedding attire and the afternoon tea element of their wedding day as well as wandering around the ruins of Danby Castle gave me total Alice in Wonderland vibes. Tom made a brilliant mad hatter and April as Alice felt perfect. It could only have been made better if the theme was The Last of Us, but I’m not sure how their parents or guests would have felt about that. Needless to say, I loved all the details and particular Tom’s work on the graphics of the day, the seating plan. April also had an incredible bouquet
Danby Castle venue is situated high up on a spur overlooking the Esk Valley. Think epic views, miles of moorland and a smattering of Wuthering Heights inspired gazes into the distance. I asked April and Tom why they chose Danby Castle for the setting of their wedding day and they could only say that they just ‘knew’ it was the right place for them. Personally, I think it was a perfect choice for their wedding, a mix of Yorkshire, history and such a beautiful setting for their spring wedding. It’s worth noting that Danby Castle wedding venue is very exposed when it comes to weather. The snow we had on the morning of the wedding and the low temperatures and wind were a bit daunting when the wedding first started. However, I absolutely loved how it made no difference to the atmosphere of the day. Tom & April’s guests were in high spirits and loved participating in the egg and spoon race, as well as the easter egg hunt.
For me I love the intimacy of photographing a Danby Castle wedding more than anything and the fact that it is literally in the middle of the moors. I grew up close to Whitby, so whenever I am passing through this area, there’s a real nostalgia to the views. Also small and intimate weddings are a favourite of mine to capture. Tom & April’s wedding day felt so special and I am so grateful that they asked me to be the photographer for their wedding day.
Sometimes I meet clients and I just want to be their best friends. It doesn’t happen all the time, but it certainly did in the case of Tom and April. I try with all of my clients to build a connection together so I can better understand how to photograph them on their wedding day. I want to put them at ease. Sometimes though, it goes a bit further. And so, seeing them on their wedding day is just like being a guest rather than working. I felt like this at April and Tom’s wedding and it really was such a pleasure to be a part of their wedding and getting to know them. Thanks so much guys. I will never be able to watch an episode of Yuri on Ice, without thinking of you.
